Are Hybrid Cars Too Quiet?

Hybrid cars are those cars that use two or more kinds of power sources usually they have a diesel or gas based engine and an electric motor train. These kinds of cars are becoming more popular with people these days. Not only are these cars very well designed and save you money but they also have been made keeping in mind the contribution that regular cars make to global warming. The most important aspect about Hybrid cars is that they do not cause any kind of noise pollution and as such are very quiet. These cars are a welcome development for people who hate the noise of gasoline engines.

Many people argue that Hybrid cars are too silent and because of this they can prove to be very dangerous when driving on the highway. Because hybrid cars make little to no noise when driving accidents involving pedestrians have occurred. The primary reason given was that the pedestrians did not hear the approaching car. According to the National Highway traffic Safety Administration a higher percentage of hybrids were involved in pedestrian accident when compared with conventional vehicles. The same is true for crashes with bicyclists.

Many motorists involved in accidents with hybrid cars claim that they didn’t realize a car coming their way. It is about time that the makers of these cars take note of this aspect and initiate necessary changes.

Due to the figures being reported and a steady rise in incidents many lawmakers are now calling for legislation to require that hybrid cars be fitted with some sort of device that will create some audible level of noise.

But isn’t it that these cars are quiet only at very low speeds? How many people drive below the speed limit? So is it possible that many of the accidents were not the result of a quiet hybrid.
