Selling Your Car: Find Out How Much It Is Worth

Recently, I bought an insight hybrid after selling my old Ford Focus. I got a good price for it, and figured I’d pass on some wisdom for when you want to sell your car. Whether you want to sell your car through a dealer or do it privately, refinance it, you will want to have an idea of how it is worth. To do this you can use a car value guide or have it valuated by a valuator.

It would be much easier to use a car value guide and many of the can be found online or at a car dealership. To get the best deals, you must have all the required information about your car. Here are some tips that will help you when using a car value guide.

  1. You must select the year, make and model of the car. You will then be asked to give in the details of your car like its current mileage, zip code, etc.
  2. You must then check out your car features. To ensure that no feature is overlooked, it is best to have the car’s original papers with you. A loaded car, i.e., one with added features, has a greater value than a base model car.
  3. You will then be asked to rank the appearance and mechanical condition of your car. The higher the ranking, the higher the value of your car. You must be ready to justify the rank you have assigned to your car.
  4. Once you are done with ranking, you will be shown a chart containing the fair value of your car.
  5. There are many online price guides that will help you decide whether you had a fair deal. Difference in price may occur due to difference in perception levels.

If you choose a valuator you must ensure that they are reputable and experienced. Make sure that you take the papers for the car along with you. Also ensure that you give them as much information as possible. You may have to get up to three valuations from different valuators to get a good idea of your car’s value.

Here are some tips to keep your car valuable-

  • Keep the repair and maintenance record updated.
  • Keep your car clean and updated.
  • Keep the odour of the car fresh and clean.
  • Seek professional help if your car is unkempt.
  • Replace any missing and damaged car parts, including the glass and windshield.
  • Remove all tags and bumper stickers.
