Feel the Pull of the Puma

During University and my younger twenty something years I had what can only be described as the best car I have ever had the pleasure of owning, a Ford Puma! Hailed on hit BBC show Top Gear as the “Cheeky, Feisty and Fashionable” 1997 car of the year, this car is a real dream to both drive and own. With its sleek line body and compact features, this car is a looker as well as a performer and the perfect balance between fun enthusiastic driving experience and sensible car owner fundamentals

Departmentalised as a ‘small sports coupe'the Ford Puma manufactured by the Ford Motor Company, was exclusively built at Ford’s Niehl plant in Cologne in Germany between 1997 and 2001.

The three door hatchback came as standard or in a few variant models, all models were front wheel drive, three door coupes with four seats and alloys came as given. Ford puma produced a Millennium model (1999-2000) of which only 1000 were made and the ‘Ford Racing Puma'(1999 - 2001) of which only 500 were made. Additionally Puma created the ‘Thunder'(2000-2001) and the ‘Black'(2000-2001).

The Ford Puma advertising campaign was particularly memorable in that it starred the American movie actor dubbed ‘King of Cool'Steve McQueen and the car has continued to receive mainly positive reviews from car enthusiasts and review websites to this day.

The puma packs so much punch for a small sports coupe at such a reasonable price, the suspension is tuned down in order to give the perfect compromise between exciting driving experience and comfort and the handling is always spot on. It is not the most environmentally friendly car, largely due to its age, and it isn’t the cheapest to run, especially if you have the larger engine models, however the pros massively outweigh the cons and if you are looking for a small and reasonably priced second hand car which packs a punch and isn’t as boring as a chess set, the ford Puma is definitely for you!
